1102 West Culver St., Phoenix, AZ 85007
A storied homestead in F.Q. Story...

What matters most in an Historic Home? Surely it's not just the age of the home – no matter how uncomfortable it might be to live in. Is it a matter of painstakingly accurate restoration? Or is the most important factor the tales the home can tell, the stories you can pass along to your guests about your home's place in History-With-A-Capital-H?

This home – 1102 West Culver Street – has it all. It's spacious, comfortable, eminently liveable. What's more its historic beauty was never smothered by hack architecture or random remodeling. Even its modern appointments speak to antiquity. Best of all, it has a story that only stands to get better:

From 1974 to 1987, this home was owned by Samuel P. "Terry" Goddard III – former Mayor of Phoenix, current Attorney General of the State of Arizona, and one day, possibly, Governor of the State of Arizona. For a number of years during Mr. Goddard's term as Mayor of Phoenix, this house, 1102 West Culver Street, had the honor of serving as the Mayoral Residence for the city of Phoenix. Here are copies of The Goddard Deeds. As his political fortunes rise, so will the value of this home.

Two years ago, we sold this home to its present owner. Now we have the honor of representing him as he passes it along to its next owner. We love this house more than any other home we know of in Phoenix, so we intend to talk about it at length.

We'll share with you everything we know about this unique home – and everything that can be seen in the dozens of photos linked below. And this web site will be here for years to come, so you can show your friends, family and guests where this home has been – and how much further you have taken it.

Let's take the tour, shall we? The bold text will link you to web pages rich with photographs. (Or if you want, you can skip ahead to the Virtual Tour.)

Start with the Elevation and Architectural Details. This home is designed like no other in the F.Q. Story Historic District – like no other home of its vintage anywhere in the Valley of the Sun.

When you go through the stately front door, you'll enter the Living Room, the seat of this home's luxuries.

But wait a moment. Before you get too comfortable relaxing by that stunning fireplace, take a left into the hallway. You'll come upon the Hallway Closets and Telephone Closet. To your left is the Front Bedroom. To your right, the Bathroom. (This is an Historic Home, so there's only one – for now.)

When Phoenix was young, it was often the case that homes were laid out in such a way that each room served as it own hallway. There would be a door at either end of the room, and the room would work not only as a room, but also as the connecting passageway to the adjoining rooms. The Master Bedroom is configured this way, and from here it is possible to walk in circles all through the house. (The seller did this again and again as he was falling in love with this home.)

Beyond this is the Back Bedroom, which can serve as an excellent office or nursery. It could also easily be converted to a Master Bathroom with Walk-In Closet. This room makes it possible to have a Master Suite without breaching the walls of the original structure. Normally, if an Historic Home has a Master Suite, it is to be found in a modern addition grafted onto the original home.

Here's a unique feature of this completely unique home: It has a Butler's Pantry and Laundry Room. You can set up multiple kitchen work areas here, either among the family or for a catering staff.

A catering staff? You might need one for the kinds of get-togethers you can host in this home. Step outdoors to see what we mean.

The first thing you'll see is the Pool and Back Yard. The seller spared no expense to get this perfect. To your right is the Dining Patio and Desert Garden, beautifully designed spaces to revel in the lesser heaven that is Arizona on a perfect day. We haven't even seen the entertaining rooms inside the house, but just imagine the kinds of parties you can host in this Back Yard.

At the back of the Back Yard, with an entrance off of 11th Avenue, is the Genuine Adobe Garage. This ancient structure seems to whisper the secrets of antiquity. There is nothing else like this still standing in any of the Historic Districts of Phoenix.

But let's slip back into the house and reflect upon the elegance and utility of the Kitchen with an O'Keefe and Merritt Range. You'll have to hunt for the ASKO dishwasher. It's hidden in the blonde cabinetry.

Just beyond that is the Breakfast Room, a space for meals less formal.

But for family dinners and dinner parties, you'll want to use the Formal Dining Room. This connects back with the Living Room, offering sight-lines that seem completely modern coupled with the Classic Adobe architecture that gives this home its timeless character.

Take a moment and look up at the ceilings. The seller lightened the color of the Adobe framework, but just take account of the height of these ceilings. In newer homes, we're used to ceilings this high, but this is a rare thing in a home of this age.

Do you have time for a lark? Down the stairs – stairs? – from the Formal Dining Room is a Basement, which is currently being used for storage but would make an excellent wine cellar. Basements are very rare in Phoenix, even in Historic Homes, so this is one more story this home has to tell.

Would you like to see how far the home has come since the current seller made it his own? We took photos of the home as a part of our comprehensive home search. Take a look at The 'Before' Pictures. The home was excellent even then, but in big ways and small the seller has brought out its underlying beauty. He would stay here forever if he could, but since he is forced to move on, the responsibility for taking this incomparable residence to the next level will be yours.

Well... it's an incomparable structure and a unique value, but it does admit of certain comparisons. It's different from every other Historic Home in Phoenix, but it fits in beautifully in the very beautiful F.Q. Story Historic District. Take a look at these Surrounding Homes to see what we mean. And just so you know that the purchase price is an incomparable bargain, compare the value to these Comparable Homes.

So: How much for all this? The home is offered at $495,000. Print out a Full MLS Listing so you can read all the details. Grab a Full-Color Flyer, too, so you can show your friends and family.

This is a storied home like no other – not in F.Q. Story and not anywhere in the Valley of the Sun. To own an Historic Home is an honor and a privilege. To own this home – unique and unrepeatable among all that is rare and beautiful – is an Achievement.
